About
After aging out of the derbies, Dainty Little Step became one of the first reining horses I ever had the opportunity to show. I traveled to the NRHA Derby with the intention of learning more about the sport and gaining experience in the Green Reiner classes during a summer break at home.
As we drove to Oklahoma City, my trainer, Ben Baldus—ever the goal setter—asked me what I hoped to achieve. With no real understanding of the difficulty involved, I told him my lucky number was 73, so that was my goal score. He kindly tried to temper my expectations, saying he’d be proud if I stayed on pattern and marked a 70.
On Day 1, Dainty Little Step carried me to a 72.5. On Day 2, she helped me reach that seemingly impossible goal of a 73. What I didn’t realize at the time was that those runs also earned her just enough to cross the $50,000 LTE milestone.

“Kathy and I started reining in the late 1980’s and had the good fortune to buy a great mare, Shiners Miss Rey, from Robert Chown in 2006. At that time Robert was splitting time between reining and cow horses. We dabbled in cow horses for a bit and our interest grew to where I went to the 2013 Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno with the intention to buy a real good two-year-old prospect in the sale. I found a good one but while there I saw Ben Baldus show A Lil Dab Will Do in the futurity and knew immediately that this was the horse I was looking for. Ben said he wasn’t for sale but promised he would check with the owners to see if they would sell him. True to his word he returned to the WT Waggoner Estate and called me a few days later to say they would part with him. The next morning Robert went to the ranch in Electra, TX and rode him and emphatically agreed that Lucky was a great horse. A month later Robert took him to the NRHA Futurity and made the Open finals. The thing that impressed me most about Lucky was his presence in the arena. He is a big, beautiful palomino and the power of his maneuvers grabs the judge’s attention.
“His cow horse show record was exemplary including two World Championships, two Reserve World Championships, many class wins and a NRCHA Supreme Cow Horse Award. But the joy he brought to us was much more than his accomplishments in the show arena. Robert told me early on that his goal was to make Lucky a household name in the cow horse community. I recall being at a small show in Ardmore and we went up in the stands to watch Lucky and Robert. There were only 10 people in the stands and a young girl and her mom came up to watch. We cheered Lucky on and after his run they came up and asked if we owned Lucky. They told us they never miss watching him and that he was their favorite horse. It is those moments that are priceless.
“But the greatest compliment Lucky ever received was at the AQHA World Show in 2014. Lucky had a stellar run to win the Junior Cow Horse finals and edged our hero, Doug Williamson and High Brow Shiner. Doug showed such grace by walking up to us to shake hands and say “I don’t feel bad about placing second to that horse.” Those moments you never forget.
“Crossing a son of High Brow Cat on a great Wimpy Little Step mare was such a great cross. We had watched Doug Milholland and Ben Baldus show Dainty Little Step, so we knew what a great mare she was. After owning Lucky, it inspired us to cross Cat Man Do on our own Wimpy mare, Little Lady Steps. Robert showed our horse, Do Big Steps to a 5th place finish is the 2018 Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate Open Finals. We owe so much to Ben Baldus, Trace Cribbs of the WT Waggoner Estate, Brooke Wharton and her great mare Dainty Little Step and of course our great friend and trainer Robert Chown for all the joy and memories A Lil Dab Will Do has brought us. Lucky is comfortably enjoying his retirement on our ranch as a very special part of our family.”
